Frog Gastrocnemius Dissection

The successful completion of the experiment requires a careful dissection of the nerve to the muscle. The photo below, taken under a dissecting scope, may assist you in dissecting the nerve to the muscle without damaging it.

 

Sarcomeres and banding in skeletal muscle

You are asked in the lab to examine muscle fibers from the frog (a prepared slide) under the microscope. You should be able to see if you find a good preparation, something like what is shown in the micrograph below. Individual myofibrils, A-bands, I-bands, Z-lines, and sarcomeres are clearly visible here. Image was made using student microscopes and the 100X oil immersion objective.
