leaf--what kind of leaf shape is present here?  Judging by this leaf, would you guess that this species prefers living in the sun or in the shade?

stems--the stems in V. virginica are winged!  The leaf bases actually continue down the stem for a little bit, creating this effect.
leaves--the leaves of this species are pretty big! habit--V. virginica is a fall-flowering plant.  While you can tell from the leaves that some insects like to munch on the leaves, deer and cattle will avoid the leaves of this species.
