The spikelets are in pairs. Staminate spikelets are sessile, and fertile spikelets are stalked. Each fertile spikelet bears an awn 5–12 cm long, the basal part of which is twisted. The awns of the spikelets in a seed head are dark and intertwined when they are mature. Can you see the stamens in this photo?

Heteropogon contortus can grow from 3'-8' tall, but in Texas, most are 3' and under.
