Endangered Species Act
of 1973
Extinction of megafauna
of North America about 11,000 years ago, probably due to hunting. Included mammoths, mastodons, camels, four-horned
antelopes, ground sloths, giant beaver, dire wolves, giant jaguar,
sabre-tooth cat. The large carnivores were probably not hunted to extinction,
but starved when the large herbivores were killed off. (know ones in bold
type)
Recent extinctions in North America include the passenger pigeon (In
memorium), snowy egret, heath
hen, Bachman's warbler, Carolina parakeet, and Stellar's sea cow (a close relative
of the endangered manatees. Most of these from overhunting for food, fashion or
profit, or thought to be pests. (know ones in bold type)
Causes
of extinctions
and endangerment:
habitat destruction
exotic species
overexploitation (hunting
and fishing, including predator control)

I found
this quote at http://www.wildbirds.org. It's a site devoted to the conservation of birds. It
really sums up what I've been trying to tell you.
"I am
only one. But still I am one. I cannot do everything. But still I can do
something. And because I cannot do Everything I will not refuse to do the Something that I can do." (Edward
Everett Hale)
