Course Summary This is a fast paced, high workload, introductory/intermediate course in Biostatistics.

This course is suitable for a general audience, undergraduate students majoring within the biological sciences or physical science graduate students who wish to improve their quantitative assessment skills.

Emphasis is placed upon the development of critical thinking skills and the course highlights a systematic approach for all problem solving, both within every day situations and within academia.
   
Topics Covered The following topics will be covered during the course:
  • the principles of experimental design
  • information collection
  • organization and summarization of information
    • measures of center, spread and shape
    • tabular and graphical presentation of information
  • presentation of research findings
  • assessing the reliability of information and errors
  • inferential statistical analysis, up to and including
    • two way ANOVA
    • linear regression/correlation
  • understanding information
  • assembling models of the big picture, from pieces of information
   
NOTE: This course has an accompanying weekly lab session, which is informally scheduled for two hours; the first hour has a mandatory attendance policy.

It is STRONGLY recommended that students be able to attend BOTH hours of the weekly lab sessions.
