Teaching Style The course has been designed to enable students to become self sufficient learners and to understand the immune system.

The course emphasizes understanding and integration of the material, above memorization.

In order to succeed in the course students should be willing to amend their studying techniques and commit the time to guided self study of the material.

Class Sessions Class sessions will be presented heavily using the Socratic method, in which individuals or student groups answer questions about the material.

The Socratic method is a great way to help students to be prepared for class and to encourage students become active participants within the course.

Clickers will be used within the class sessions, to anonymously survey the whole class, to assess understanding of the topics as they are covered.

Class Preparation In order for students to be prepared and comfortable with the class material, it is important that students: review the course material before and after each class session and use the pre-lecture questions as a guide of the material to be discussed within class sessions.

Students are not expected to learn or completely understand the material from the course text on their own, but are expected to have reviewed new material prior to every class and to have extensively reviewed and understood the material previously presented.

Study Techniques Immunology can be a challenging subject to integrate and master. To help ensure that students do well in the courses, students are adviced to:
  • chat with your instructor, early, if you have any questions
  • ask questions in lectures, study groups and review sessions
  • read before and after every lecture
  • complete all assignments
  • study frequently, but only for short periods of time
  • frequently review the material
    • review and follow the problem solving steps
    • review returned problems
    • re-draw concept maps of the material, as we add details
  • write lists of definitions
  • draw concept maps and diagrams to help integrate the material

Study Groups Study groups will be scheduled three times a week. The first study group session will be headed by the instructor and subsequent study groups will be facilitated by student preceptors.

During study group sessions students will work through problem sets, or review exam questions, to refine how to solve problems and appropriately articulate answers.

Study groups will be presented using the Socratic method, in which students will split into small groups to answer their own questions, guided by their instructor or colleagues.

Practice Questions & Assignments Practice exam questions will be provided, to use as a study guide, to help integrate the course material and to learn how to articulate an understanding of the subject.

Graded assignment questions will be presented, as frequently as possible, and will provide students with the opportunity to challenge their concepts and understanding of the material.

Exams The exams are designed to challenge students with respect to their knowledge and understanding of the course material, as well as their ability to use the course material to solve novel problems.
